Seedcamp or Startup Wise Guys: Two Routes Into European Funding

European founders usually frame this as accelerator versus fund, but the real split is cheque size against what you give up for it. Startup Wise Guys writes roughly EUR 50,000 for 3-6% equity and runs on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline stated on its site. Seedcamp writes $350,000 to $1,250,000, a number closer to a seed round than a pre-seed top-up, though it does not publish current application dates. Those two facts alone should decide which door you knock on first.

Cheque size against equity taken

Startup Wise Guys takes 3-6% for about EUR 50,000. That is a fund-style trade: small cheque, small dilution, and a bet that their network does the heavy lifting later. Seedcamp's $350,000 to $1,250,000 range sits at a different order of magnitude, and a round that size at a typical seed valuation will usually cost you more than 6%, even if Seedcamp does not publish a fixed percentage. If your company cannot credibly use half a million dollars yet, taking it anyway just to say you raised it is a bad trade. Take the EUR 50,000 and grow into the bigger cheque later.

Stage fit

Startup Wise Guys is built for teams closer to idea or early-traction stage, which is why the cheque is small and the programme structure (cohort, mentors, demo day) does the validation work. Seedcamp's cheque size implies they expect you to already have a product, some revenue or usage signal, and a team that can absorb a serious amount of capital without drowning in it. If you are pre-product, Seedcamp is the wrong door even if you can get a meeting. If you are post-seed and still only asking for EUR 50,000, you are underselling your own traction.

Follow-on path

This is where the fund-versus-accelerator distinction actually matters. A programme that takes equity for a service package, like Conector Startup Accelerator at 4-7% equity for programme plus services, is optimising for your graduation, not your Series A. A fund like Seedcamp is optimising for its own follow-on rights, which means its $350,000 to $1,250,000 cheque often comes with an expectation, written or not, that they get first look at your next round. If you want hands-on building help and a cohort, go the Conector or Startup Wise Guys route. If you want a capital partner who will keep writing cheques as you scale, Seedcamp's structure fits that better, assuming you clear their bar.

Where you actually have to be

Neither Seedcamp nor Startup Wise Guys publishes a hard residency requirement on the figures we have, but the programme model tells you what to expect. Cohort-based accelerators with service bundles, like Conector, generally assume physical presence for at least the core sprint weeks. Fund-style cheques like Seedcamp's are far more location-agnostic by design, since the relationship is capital plus advisory, not a shared office. If relocation is the real constraint on your decision, weight it toward the fund model rather than the cohort model, and treat any accelerator's claim of 'remote-friendly' as something to confirm directly before you apply, not something to assume.

Other European routes worth knowing before you choose

If your company is deep tech or hardware rather than software, the Seedcamp-versus-Startup Wise Guys choice may not even be the right frame. EIC Pathfinder offers grants of up to EUR 4 million plus booster grants of EUR 50,000, with its next Open call closing 12 May 2026 and a Challenges call closing 28 October 2026. That is non-dilutive money, which changes the entire equity calculation above. If you already have a product at TRL 6-8, the EIC Accelerator combines a grant below EUR 2.5 million over 24 months with an investment component, and short proposals can be submitted at any time, batched for evaluation on a rolling first-of-month schedule.

If you have any Latin America angle to your business, EU-LAC Digital Accelerator is worth a look precisely because it is not cash: open call #6 is live now, with acceleration services valued at 30-40k€ and a deadline listed only as 30 November, so confirm the year before you plan around it. For climate or impact-adjacent founders, Katapult Accelerator writes EUR 150,000 to EUR 500,000, a cheque size that sits between Startup Wise Guys and Seedcamp, though Katapult does not publish confirmable dates.

The actual decision

If you need validation, structure and a first cheque to prove the model, take Startup Wise Guys' EUR 50,000 for 3-6% and treat the equity as cheap tuition. If you already have traction and want a capital partner who will keep backing you, go after Seedcamp's $350,000 to $1,250,000 and accept that the process will take longer because they don't publish fixed deadlines. Don't apply to both as a hedge; the pitch, the data room and the stage story you tell each one should be different, and trying to run one narrative through both will show.
